Conceptions Connect, a nonprofit arts education 501(c)(3), hosted its first Community Collaboration Make & Take Workshop! Kids and adults came together to design and create individual pieces that formed a larger, collective display. After contributing to the artwork, each participant took home their creation. This work, Moon Children, deeply interwoven with the moon, nurtures miraculous springtime bounty embracing all that nature provides. Lunar movements regulate life’s rhythms seen and felt on planet Earth. An intricate choreography of nature guides this dance. Gravity, the greatest invisible force on the planet sets the moon’s course. Magnolia blossoms, harbingers of the season, emanate from forces governing existence. The artists use of shapes and color fields signify spring and new birth hovering between abstraction and representation. Life’s renewal forces are heralded in this work. The artists use their original artists process, known as Metalagram®, to achieve the illusion of three dimensions on 2D aluminum sheet metal. Here’s a sampling stroll through the #Detroit #SecretGarden newly renovated back yard at the #MorossHouse. In the mid 1970s the Detroit Garden Center operated the #garden space, built the potting shed, and planted the sycamore tree and #wysteria. The wisteria is one of the oldest, if not oldest - as certified University of MI - in the Midwest. The Garden Center operated out of this space from the 1970s to mid 2000s when the city of Detroit owned the property and operated as the Moross House Museum. Tours and events hosted at this property are remembered well. #schinkelfineart now brings this space back to be enjoyed in Detroit. October 3rd is the Grand Opening of Schinkel Fine Art Gallery at the Moross House and #eventspace, the Detroit Secret Garden. The Opening exhibition, Threads of Connection, begins on October 3 and runs until early December. Recently I was in Salmo BC, for the music festival #shambala That weekend of music, art, and friendship inspired me to create this #Metalamix art piece, “Spirit in the Sky”. An extremely wet spring causing trees to submerge under water yet being able to survive is an allegory for the artist’s lives. Donning waders at the crack of dawn, the artists made photographs and used these images as the work’s base layer. This representational yet fantastical work was created sculpturally, making 2D aluminum appear 3D. Dialog about life’s struggles and growth on the road to achieving equanimity and balance underpins this work. At the intersection of art + science the artists used old world techniques + 21st century technology to create sculpturally for an interactive experience. This Metalagram work appears differently from 180 degree vantage points and at varying angles of incidence. Lighting makes photons dance across the hand made layered aluminum. One’s path in search of identity has many turns, peaks and valleys. Frequently two steps are taken forward and more often than planned there’s one step backward. Searching for identity is an arduous quest and doing so is a cause for celebration. Realizing that you are worthy and enough just as you are propels one to new heights. “Empath Reborn In Ash” The journey of life is the greatest gift of all. This past #BurningMan was a perfect example of that. For some it proved challenging, others missed the opportunity, but for many, it was the experience of a lifetime. The weather conditions certainly changed the course of the experience, but for those who persevered, it brought them closer together with a fulfilling culmination. This is the feeling I had as I watched man burn after postponment. This #Metalamix artwork and variations was created from that night and mixing it with my artwork “Meta Empath”. Watching it gave me a sense of rejuvenation and catharsis. We rise from the ash and return to the ash, a cyclical cycle. Eyes are windows to one's souls, including animals. The souls seen and felt in this work are extricably interwoven into the very fabric of existence. The metaphysical shaman world depicted by the artists’ artwork "Shrouded Path” ignited inspiration for this work. The artists' journey was additionally piqued from planetary energy emanating from the Earth’s inner layers. Intersect shaman wisdom with the Earth's core and this work was born. The Schinkel's rich use of color and shapes hover between abstraction and representation. Fantastical, other-worldly emotions, feelings and understandings are conjured. One's imagination is free to roam - inward and outward - wherever it needs to access knowledge. Viewers come along on the mystical journey aided by four compass directions and their animal energy guides. Intense soul-searching work is found in a multidimensional spiral, at the four directions. Alberto Villoldo (b. 1949) in “The Wisdom Wheel; A Mythic Journey through the Four Directions” (2022) illuminates the why and the how. North generates hummingbird energy, eagle wisdom emanating from the east, serpent teachings are generated by the south and jaguar guidance is found in the west. The artists experienced this shaman world energy during a temezcal ceremony held for several hours in a sweat lodge in Costa Rica. The duo added colored lighting to "Shrouded Path" and combined digital photographs of a rare fire opal and a rare fluorite, both formed in the depths of planet Earth to create this original Metalamix™.
